Overview

The four Gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — tell the story of Jesus from four distinct perspectives. Each author wrote for a different audience and emphasized different aspects of who Jesus was: a promised king, a suffering servant, a compassionate healer, the divine Word made flesh. Reading all four together gives you a complete, layered portrait that no single Gospel can provide on its own. The Gospels Journey plan takes you through all four books in 60 days, with readings designed to be about 10 minutes each. The plan is structured to let each Gospel speak with its own voice first. You’ll read through Matthew, then Mark, then Luke, then John, experiencing each author’s unique perspective and theological emphasis. After completing all four, the final section brings you back to key parallel passages — the resurrection accounts, the feeding of the five thousand, the transfiguration, and Gethsemane — so you can see how the same events look through different eyes. This comparison deepens your understanding in ways that reading a single Gospel simply can’t. Whether you’re reading the Gospels for the first time or the fiftieth, this plan offers a structured way to encounter Jesus through the four testimonies preserved by the early church. At about 10 minutes per day over two months, it’s a substantial but achievable commitment that many readers describe as transformative. You’ll emerge with a rich, multi-dimensional understanding of the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Reading Tips

  1. 1Notice what each Gospel includes that the others leave out — these differences reveal each author’s purpose.
  2. 2Mark is the shortest and fastest-paced Gospel. Pay attention to how urgently he moves from scene to scene.
  3. 3When you reach John, notice how different the tone is. John is reflective where the others are narrative.
  4. 4During the cross-Gospel readings at the end, keep notes on how each author describes the same event differently.
  5. 5If you’re reading with a group, assign each person a different Gospel and share your unique takeaways.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Gospels Journey take to complete?

The plan has 60 readings at about 10 minutes each. Reading daily, you’ll finish in two months.

Why read all four Gospels instead of just one?

Each Gospel author had a different audience and theological emphasis. Matthew highlights Jesus as the Jewish Messiah, Mark emphasizes his power and suffering, Luke focuses on compassion for outsiders, and John reveals his divine identity. Together, they give the fullest picture.

What are the cross-Gospel readings at the end?

The last 12 readings revisit key events — the resurrection, feeding of the five thousand, the transfiguration, and Gethsemane — across all four Gospels so you can compare how each author tells the same story.

Is this plan suitable for someone new to the Bible?

Yes. The Gospels are narrative and accessible. If you’re completely new, consider starting with the 5 Minutes Starter plan first, then moving to this one.

Can I start with any Gospel, or should I follow the order?

The plan is ordered Matthew, Mark, Luke, John for a reason — it mirrors the traditional arrangement and builds understanding progressively. We recommend following the order.
